Fine Art, Ground Floor

Our new island is now up and running by the name of "Leodis". Access to the island is by invite only to the group of Leodis at the moment whilst we are building. For those of you asking why Leodis?
The name "Leeds" came from "Loidis" pronounced "Leodis" (Bede states: "...regione quae vocatur Loidis" region known as Loidis), which was a name recorded in Anglo-Saxon sources for a Celtic kingdom that survived in the area for a while after the Anglo-Saxon invasion. Leeds has been known since being mentioned (as "Ledes") in the Domesday Book of 1086, (the name evolved into "Leedes" and finally "Leeds").

It is here that we undertake the construction of the Old Mining Building which houses Fine Art, Cultural Studies and History of Art at the University of Leeds. The island will have many areas for students in these departments to explore and create their work in. The purpose of making an exact replica of the Olding Mining Building is to help people new to Second Life understand the environment with something familiar.

A little background

"Second Life is a 3-D virtual world built and owned entirely by its residents. After opening to the public in 2003 Second Life has grown massively and currently has around 3,300,000 inhabitants from around the world.

Second Life provides a unique and flexible environment for educators and artists interested in distance learning, computer supported cooperative work, simulation, new media studies, corporate training, artwork realisation, curatorial practice, social networking and experiential learning amongst other things.

Second Life provides an opportunity to use simulation in a safe environment to enhance experiential learning, allowing individuals to practice skills, try new ideas, and learn from their mistakes. The ability to prepare for similar real-world experiences by using Second Life as a simulation has unlimited potential! There are many options for educators looking to explore and create learning spaces in Second Life.

Artists can work together in Second Life from anywhere in the world as part of a globally networked virtual environment. Using Second Life as a supplement to traditional studio environments provides new opportunities for enriching an existing practice."

This was part of the original proposal for the School of Fine Art. We are now up and running and the building has begun!
